|1910 - ? 1975
In 1909 Baron Sir John Henry Schroder donated 5 acres of land to Egham Urban District Council on which to build an isolation hospital to serve the parishes of Old Windsor, Egham and Englefield Green.
The Egham Isolation Hospital opened in 1910 for the care of patients suffering from infectious diseases, such as diphtheria, smallpox and scarlet fever. It consisted of two ward blocks accommodating 6 to 10 patients. The staff were housed in a separate building. By the end of the year 39 patients had been treated - 28 for scarlet fever, 7 for diphtheria and 4 for erysipelas.
During 1911 some 48 patients were admitted - 23 for scarlet fever, 15 for diphtheria and 10 for erysipelas. During the following year the Hospital received 46 patients - 25 with scarlet fever, 11 with diphtheria, 7 with erysipelas, 2 with enteric fever (typhoid) and 1 with ophthalmia neonatorum.
In 1920 the Hospital had 18 beds. During the year 49 cases of scarlet fever were admitted and 15 of diphtheria.
During WW2 (1939-1945) the Hospital closed. A Home Guard platoon was stationed on the premises.
In 1948 the Hospital joined the NHS. With the advent of antibiotic drugs, isolation hospitals were no longer necessary. The Hospital was renamed Northcroft Hospital and became a general hospital run by the local General Practitioners.
In 1960 it had 14 beds. It became a geriatric home for male patients.
It closed in the 1970s.
Present status (June 2011)
The site was sold to the James Butcher Housing Association. It was redeveloped in 1979 into Schroder Court - retirement housing (consisting of 47 apartments) for people aged over 60 years.
