Maternity

In the late 1940s the South London Hospital for Women and Children purchased Helensburgh House, a large mansion in Nightingale Lane, once the residence of the preacher and philanthropist Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892).  The building was converted into a maternity home with 30 beds.  It was opened in 1948 by Queen Elizabeth and named the Queen Elizabeth Maternity Home.

By 1975 the Queen Elizabeth Maternity Home had become Queen Elizabeth House, a pre-convalescent home.  It closed when its parent hospital, the South London Hospital for Women and Children, closed in 1984.

Present status (December 2008)

Queen Elizabeth House now provides sheltered housing, managed by the Wandle Housing Association.  It has been divided into 41 studio rooms and apartments.  The exterior of the original mansion, however, is largely unchanged.
