ALMSHOUSES OF LONDON

Manning and Anderdon Almshouses

46-54 High Street, Chislehurst, Kent BR7 5AQ

Two sisters - Anne and Maria Anderdon - founded the almshouses in 1881 for 12 poor elderly Christians. (The sisters also ran St Michael's Orphanage).

Their mother Anna Maria Manning, the sister of Cardinal Manning (a prominent Catholic), had married John Anderdon, the brother-in-law of Canon Francis Murray (1820-1902), an Anglo-Catholic cleric. (In 1871 Canon Murray had founded the Church of the Annunciation nearby).

The terrace of half-timbered cottages faced the church. They lay perpendicular to the High Street, being accessed by a driveway leading off it.

The inhabitants of the almshouses were required to be not less than 60 years old, of good character and to be resident in the area of the ancient parish of Chislehurst.

Current status

The buildings are Grade II listed. They consist of seven 2-bedroomed apartments and provide retirement housing for people who attend Church regularly and live or have close relatives in the parish. They are managed by trustees associated with the Church of the Annunciation.
