ALMSHOUSES OF LONDON

Dr William Spurstowe House

36-38 Navarino Road, Hackney, E8 1FF

Dr William Spurstowe House was completed in 1966. It replaced the Spurstowe Almshouses in Sylvester Path, which had become cramped and needed much repair.

The 3-storey building contained 16 apartments and provided accommodation for both men and women.

In 2012 the block was rebuilt on a larger scale at a cost of £3,871,000, of which the Homes and Communities Agency had contributed £2,190,000.

The former residents began to move in from 8th June 2012. Those resident at Bishop Wood's Almshouses were also transferred to the new building.

Current status

The almshouses are managed by the Hackney Parish Almshouses Charity. The building contains 31 self-contained single-bedroom apartments for single elderly people.
