In 1953 William Berman's Trust rebuilt the almshouses lost in Shoreditch during WW2 (1939-1945).

The new almshouses, named Berman's Close, consist of 17 single-bedroom apartments. There are also a communal lounge and laundry room, and a communal garden.

The buildings were renovated in 2004.

Applicants must be unmarried or widowed women of good character aged over 50 years.

Current status

The buildings continue to be managed by William Berman's Trust.
