Medical character:
1990 - 2015

Geriatric
In 1990 Hill Homes Ltd opened a new nursing home on the site of Goldsmiths' House.  At the request of the housing charity, St Marylebone Old People's Homes Ltd, which had transferred  its assets - some £1.36m - to Hill Homes to fund the building work,  it was named Newstead in memory of its Home at Nos. 17-19 Greville Place, NW6, which had opened in April 1952.

The Home provided accommodation and nursing for 36 elderly residents in two wings - Thompson and Goldsmiths.  Each resident had their own bedroom on the ground floor.  There were also communal sitting and dining areas, a conservatory and a garden.  Staff rooms were located on the first floor.

In August 2005 the Home was taken over by Gold Care Homes Ltd.

Present status (February 2009)

The Home continues to provide long-term care for the elderly requiring 24-hour supervision.

Update:  May 2015

In December 2014 the residents were told that the Home would be closing following an unannounced inspection by the Care Quality Commission the previous month.  It is expected that they will be relocated to other Homes.

Update:  June 2022

Planning permission was requested to demolish the building and to build three apartment blocks on the site.
